Traditional and Digital techniques making Fashion Flats
To create traditional fashion flats I used gridded paper and put a line down the middle. Next I looked for some inspiration, I did this by looking at clothes I like and have already got saved on my phone.
This image from the 2021 Summer collection of Golf Wang made by Tyler the Creator was my inspiration. With this I then plotted on one side the main points of the garment front, being the collar points, shoulder, sleeve corners and the hem at the bottom. Next I joined the dots I placed to create one side of my garment, then with the midline I reflected the garment to the other side. Finally, I added the pockets where I wanted them and the front was complete.
Creating the back as simple as I already had the front design to base the back off of. I started with the basic points again and then joined them together. Then I added the pockets with gave me my final design and my complete garment through the use of the traditional method of making fashion flats.
To create digital fashion flats was not as simple, first I had to have my traditional method of making one to base my idea and design off of. With this I had to import it into Adobe Illustrator and then I could start creating my digital addition of my fashion flats. To do this I used the pen tool and traced around the image of the lines I had drawn and then blocked out each main piece into its own sections. Once this tedious task was done I was able to fill in each piece with the colours I wanted. I selected the colours I wanted to use and stuck to brown/neutral colour swatches and then began filling in each piece by selecting it and then filling it and moving each section to make sure all the details were visible.
Comparing Traditional and Digital fashion flat designing I prefer the digital version as it creates a better final piece and can be more technical with the ability to add colour easily. However, to start digital it is easier to get an initial design through the traditional method it allows for a better final design digitally rather than starting straight in Adobe Illustrator.
