Tie dyeing

Doug Evans

Tie-dye is a term used to describe a number of resist dyeing techniques and the resulting dyed products of these processes. The process of tie-dye typically consists of folding, twisting, pleating, or crumpling fabric or a garment, before binding with string or rubber bands, followed by the application of dye or dyes. The manipulations of the fabric before the application of dye are called resists, as they partially or completely prevent the applied dye from colouring the fabric. more sophistic tie-dye may involve additional steps, including an initial application of dye before the resist, multiple sequential dyeing and resist steps, and the use of other types of resists,(stitching, stencils) and discharge.

Unlike regular resist-dyeing techniques, modern tie-dye is characterised by the bright, saturated primary colours and bold patterns. These patterns, including the portal, mandala, and peace sign, and the use of multiple bold colours, have become clichéd since the peak popularity of tie-dye in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s.

Appliqué is ornamental needlework in which pieces or patches of fabric in different shapes and patterns are sewn or stuck onto a larger piece to form a picture or pattern. It is commonly used as decoration, especially on garments.

I like my appliqué design to represent Kandinsky’s artwork as the piece sewn on top of the first tie-dye artwork stand out from it contrasting it. The stitches also are contrasting and leave space for the edges to fray to added to the design. One improvement I would make would be to add more shapes as a third layer on top of it for more depth in the sewing and to relate to the initial artist piece.

Quilting is the term given to the process of joining a minimum of three layers of fabric together either through stitching manually using a needle and thread, or mechanically with a sewing machine or specialised long arm quilting system.

I like my quilting design above as the stitching runs along top of my tie-dyed fabric diagonally which creates contrasting lines in the design and resemble a puffer jacket. I also like it as the tie-dye colours caused by the accordion folding diagonally before dyeing make the colour patterns striped which works with the stitching. One thing I would do in the future would be to stitch in the opposite direction diagonally as that would create more contrast and maybe improve the design.

Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as pearls, beads, quill, and sequins.

I like this embroidery piece as the lines and circles highlight the tie-dye design and also relate to my artist Kandinsky. One thing I would improve next time would be to add embroidery using a machine. This is because I had stitches these designs which aren’t the best.
