Sonia Delaunay Research

Sonia Delaunay was a French artist, who spent most of her working life in Paris. She formally trained in Russia and Germany before moving to France and expanding her practice to include textile, fashion, and set design.

Sonia Delaunay saw herself as seeking out combinations of colours that could evoke a multitude of possible interpretations, and create simultaneous meanings. It was only natural for her to expand her artistic activities into the world of design since, as she experienced it, there was no separation between art and life.

Her inspirations were unconventional. The artist found she was influenced by “everything around [her]” from poetry to music to historical artefacts - on trips to the Louvre she shunned the paintings galleries in favour of the collections of Egyptian Jewellery, Assyrian sculpture and the arts of Mesopotamia.

I like Sonia Delaunay’s artwork as the abstraction gives room for anyone to interpret it however they see the paintings. I also like the perfection of the circles giving balance to the paintings and yet she still gives the image the feel of flow throughout it.
