Screen printing onto paper

For my screen printing samples onto paper i did more of my own tags in each style of graffiti, this gave me the same word with different looks. Overall the outcomes were somewhat successful however some went wrong with the colours looking washed out and the first one being written mirrored as I needed to write mirrored first and then printing it onto paper the right way round.

First Sample

This sample went wrong as I didn’t put enough oil pastels onto the screen to push through onto the paper when screenprinting, this meant the colour wasn’t that bright and didn’t give full lines throughout.

Another problem with this piece was that the outcome is mirrored due tome having to write on the wrong side of the screen and then turn it over to print. Taking this forward I had to initially write mirrored so when I flipped the screen it would be the right side and legible.

Sample Two

This sample was more successful than the first as I took the mistakes that happened and learnt from that by mirroring my design first and applying more oil pastels to the screen before printing it onto the paper.

I like this sample as the colours stand out more and the throw up graffiti style is represented well with the addition of the crown underneath.

However, I need to use the squeegee better on the screen with the liquid that pushes the image through onto the page as some of the image has been missed out leaving a gap in the design.

Sample Three

I like this blockbuster sample through screenprinting as both colours came though strong onto the page and captured the design and idea of the blockbuster style.

I think this could’ve been executed better by making a better, more legible piece rather than this as you can’t really tell what it says.

Sample Four

This sample shows wildstyle graffiti with the screenprinting. This looks good as the sharp edges capture the style intended and the use of the screenprinting worked well as the colours were strong in most parts.

Some improvements needed would just be making sure I applied pressure across the whole screen while printing and pressing it onto the paper.

Sample Five

For this sample I tried to capture stencil graffiti while applying the media to the screen and then printing it onto paper.

Overall this hasn’t worked well and there are a few reasons for this, the first being the stencil. This stencil was made from paper which meant during the process of applying the oil pastel to the screen the stencil ripped and wasn’t strong enough to support the oil pastel going onto the screen. Secondly, due to the first point it meant I didn’t apply enough media to the screen so when I printed onto paper the image was faint and therefore not successful.

Sample Six

This sample shows a two toned tagging style of graffiti. This was 90% successful in the application of the colours and the use of one to create the shadow effect on one side of the letters.

I like this image as it has strong colours and mostly printed through onto the paper with some areas being less vibrant and defined.
