Repeat Pattern Making

For my repeat patterns I created a viewfinder square and placed it onto my primary research images. With this I drew them into a page of squares and then photocopied them to create repeat patterns for each of them. These gave me different looks and designs for ideas as patterns for fabrics.

Sample One

This sample shows a 90 degree rotation anti-clockwise and a half brick repeat horizontally.

I like this repeat pattern however it could’ve included more colour as the black lines throughout the image are harsh compared to the graffiti.

Sample Two

This sample shows a half brick repeat pattern horizontally.

I like this sample as it is basic in its design however the use of colours brings it to life. Also the key focal point of “SMO” stands out well and I like the use of the brick repeat.

Sample Three

This sample shows a half brick repeat pattern vertically.

I like this repeat pattern as it creates one image like a wall of graffiti itself, the use of colour also adds to the image bringing pops throughout, contradicting the harsh black tags.

Sample Four

This sample shows a 180 degree rotation in each row of the pattern horizontally.

I like this sample as the abstract creatures captured in the original graffiti and repeated into mine work well with my developments of the multiple lines within and the use of multiple colours creating a rainbow effect throughout the repeat pattern.

Sample Five

This sample shows a 45 degree rotation to the whole repeat pattern and then a 90 degree rotation to every other square with a half drop brick repeat.

I don’t like this outcome as the outlines and colours don’t stand out enough and the initial 45 degree rotation to the whole piece doesn’t work well.

Sample Six

This sample shows a 45 degree rotation to the whole repeat pattern and then a 90 degree rotation to every other square with a half drop brick repeat.

I don’t like this outcome as the outlines and colours don’t stand out enough and the initial 45 degree rotation to the whole piece doesn’t work well.

Sample Seven

This sample shows a 90 degree rotation clockwise to the repeat pattern.

I like this outcome as the key subject being the monkey in the image is captured well and then the use of colours around it help to add detail to the image along with the rotation.

Sample Eight

This sample shows a 90 degree rotation in each row of the pattern horizontally.

I somewhat like this sample as the rotation of each row is good however I feel the green in each square means the red overpowers it as the green is too thin.

Sample Nine

This sample shows a no rotations in the repeat pattern.

I like this outcome as the final image makes a great repeat pattern. I think the use of just the red and black contradict one another well and the red lines connecting throughout make it look like it was one image before rather than the same put together multiple times.

Sample Ten

This sample shows a 180 degree rotation in the pattern each square.

I like this sample as the colours red white and black work well with the outlines on each of the subjects in the image, one improvement I would add is the lines to suggest movement and maybe a background colour.
