Research into different techniques
Boro stitching - boro stitching is the practice of using a simple straight stitch to reinforce a textile item using spare or would-be-discarded scraps of fabric. The technique originated in Japan and is the art of mending in which textiles have been patched together to prolong their life. In recent years the simple method of fabric repair has grown in popularity as more people have pursued slow abs sustainable fashion and sought to extend the life of their clothing through repairing rather than throwing them away and getting a new garment.
creative darning/ repairing - Darning is a sewing technique for repairing holes on worn areas in fabric or knitting using needle and thread alone. It is often done by hand, but is also possible to darn on a sewing machine. This can be creatively accomplished through many different ways such as pattern darning, net darning and needle weaving creating different styles of outcomes on the garment with it also being fully repaired.
Patchwork - Patchwork or “pieced work” is a form of needlework that involves sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design. The larger design is usually based on repeating patterns built up with different fabric shapes or different fabric colours. There is also another type of patchwork, this term “crazy quilting” is often used to refer to the textile art of crazy patchwork and is often used interchangeably with that term, this is where you join pieces on-top of one another with no set order and lacks repeating motif.
Appliqué - Appliqué is ornamental needlework in which pieces or patches of fabric in different shapes and patterns are sewn or stuck onto a larger piece to form a picture or pattern. It is commonly used as decoration, especially on garments. The technique is accomplished either by hand stitching or machine.
Knitting - Knitting is a method by which yarn is manipulated to create a textile, or fabric. It is used to create many types of garments. Knitting May be done by hand or by machine. Knitting creates stitches : loops of yarn in a row, either flat or round (tubular). There are many different types of knitting including french knitting, finger knitting, arm knitting and many more. These all create different styles and outcomes.
Weaving - Weaving is a method of textile production in which two distinct sets of yarn or thread are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. Other methods are knitting, crocheting, felting, and braiding or plaiting. This is the process of combining warp and weft components to make a woven structure.
Dissolvable fabric - Dissolvable fabric is traditionally used in commercial machine embroidery to prevent stitches from sinking into high pile fabrics like towels and fleeces. This allowed you to embroider designs and then remove the fabric through wetting it leaving you with just the embroidered design.
