Jackson Pollock Research

Doug Evans

Paul Jackson Pollock was an American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was widely noticed for his ”drip technique“ of pouring of splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface, enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles.

A study finds that Pollock’s “drip” technique was geared to avoid a classic fluid mechanical instability, whether he Was aware of it or not. At times they could suggest the life-force in nature itself, at others they could evoke man’s entrapment - in the body, I’m the anxious mind, and I’m the newly frightening modern world.

Why did Jackson Pollock do splatter painting?

The ”dripping” method allowed him to make energetic works. His paintings are explosions of curving lines, shapes and colours. To do this, Pollock would put his large canvases on the floor so that he could move around all four sides of his work. He also used very liquid paints so that he could easily drop the paint onto his canvases.

I like Jackson Pollock’s artwork as it is free and there are no restraints or restrictions therefore achieving what he set out to do and avoid a classic fluid mechanical instability. Also the use of bold colours create an attractive eye-catching piece.
